Justice & the Law

Justice & the Law

There are times when I read about a current events like the recent suspension of constitutional civil rights in this country that make me think of the 1989 movie, A Dry White Season. In the movie, Ben du Toit, played by Donald Sutherland, is an Afrikaner school teacher who goes to the offices of a human rights lawyer, Ian Mackenzie, played by Marlon Brando. Scales He wants the lawyer’s help in demanding a formal inquest into the murder by the police of his gardener’s son, a black South African, who is alleged to have committed suicide while in police custody, but who was really beaten to death. He tells the lawyer he wants justice done in the case. The lawyer responds: "Justice and law…. I suppose they could be described as distant cousins, and here in South Africa they’re simply not on speaking terms at all." When Congress decides to ignore constitutional rights in favor of allowing the President to decide when such rights can be claimed and when they are suspended, it is United States apratheid.
