Travel Report from Mykonos Greece

Travel Report from Mykonos Greece

We are in Mykonos, Greece. Last night, before leaving Turkey, there was a party at Ephesus for the passengers. Ephesus was one of the great Ionian cities and a leading seaport. The great St Paul went to Ephesus where he preached in the synagogues, but after causing protests preached to the gentiles. He was there for two years. He became the center of  a controversy when the silversmiths of Ephesus rioted over the loss of work in creating Diana worship idols because of the conversion of people to Christianity by Paul. Paul ended up leaving Ephesus for Macedonia because of the uproar.

There are white caps and a strong wind here in MNykonos. We are on anchor and took the small boat to the shore where we walked the rock sidewalk along the water. There are narrow streets with a rock surface that twist and turn like a huge maze and with small stores or living areas along the walk. The houses are white washed with bright blue shutters. There are wind mills here. The small round Dutch looking wind mills that sit along a hill in a row. Small fishing boats painted bright colors are anchored in the clear water of the harbor. Color is everywhere.

The sea is a transparent clear blue color. The red and blue flowers against the white washed buildings is beautiful. Small churches are found along walk ways in small squares with the houses. At the water front fresh fish just caught are being cleaned and sold. The vegetable farmers are selling to the locals as well. An old woman dressed totally in black walks by hunched over carrying a sack in each hand. Men with large mustaches and deeply tanned faces gesture and argue with one another. Mixed in with this are the tourists. An enormous Princess cruise ship has arrived and has disgorged bus load after bus load of people, but because the town is laid in narrow twisting walk ways they aren’t a problem except at the water walk way where they take photos.

I sat at a cafe drinking espresso and watching the fish and vegetables being sold. The passing parade of people was high entertainment. A man and his wife sat at the table next to me. He wore a tee shirt with "Orcas Island" on the front. It turned out they were from Houston, but had friends living on the island an had spent a lot of time there. It is a small world.

An old man with a large mustache and a typical creek hat walks by slowly, hunched over from age and carrying a plastic sack with a whole fish inside, its tail sticking straight up out of the sack.  Old men sit on a bench a short distance away. One, with his hand resting on his cane, carry’s on a conversation with his friend in a loud voice as if they were angry, but it turns out to be the way most of these men talk to each other.

We have lunch at a out door cafe. A huge pelican sits on a wall a short distance away. since this place is located inside the building area and away from the sea I have no idea what it is doing there. A man pulls up in one of those motor scotter rigs with a small truck bed. The pelican climbs on the bed and the two of them drive away along the narrow side walk between the walls of buildings on each side – a mystery unsolved as yet. For lunch I have octopus and sea food with strong Greek beer. It is excellent.  Lita’s pasta is also very good. After walking around and looking at the gold jewelery in the windows we make our way back to the ship having purchased nothing. There are no aggressive sales people here as there was in Turkey and walking around and window shopping is enjoyable. We are here until midnight and then move on Piraeus, Greece.
