CAROL ANN RYAN September 16, 2022

Carol Ann Ryan Luvera, the mother of our eight children, died last Friday evening September 16, 2022 in Mount Vernon, Washington at the care facility where she was a patient. The children had been keeping vigil after the doctor said she had only a day or so to live. She was in a coma. The children Michael, Elizabeth, Dan and Theresa were there when she died. Theresa was in the room at the time holding her mother’s hand. She reported that Carol squeezed Theresa’s hand, opened her eyes and tried to say something. Theresa replied and Carol died. Carol and I were Anacortes high school sweet hearts. Our families lived only a block apart. We went to school and we grew up together. We  married after I was in college on September 15, 1956 at St Mary’s Catholic church in Anacortes. Carol was born in 1936 and I was born in 1935. I was 21 years old.  We were married when I had just returned from Alaska commercial purse seine fishing a few days before the wedding. We immediately left for Spokane where I was attending Gonzaga Law School. School began only three days later and we drove there. We had two children, Paul Nicholas and Daniel, while I was a student in law school. Over our 25 year marriage we had eight wonderful children. After a separation, we divorced February 13, 1981 in Mount Vernon, where I was practicing law. Carol remained in Mount Vernon and raised the children with my support and participation. Carol never remarried. I married Lita Barnett, a fellow attorney. Lita and I  have been married forty one years.  Carol was active in Church affairs and community activities until late in life. The children remained close to her and helped her. They were responsible for taking care of her at the end of her life. She was a loving mother and a good Christian woman. May she rest in peace.

  1. I am so saddened to hear about Carol’s passing. She was such a kind and beautiful soul. My sincere condolences to your whole family. I have fond memories of babysitting your kids and seeing her with her sweet mother, Helen, who was such a wonderful friend of our mom.

    May She Rest In Peace.
