MADI GRAS FLOATS AND OTHER ADVENTURES

MADI GRAS FLOATS AND OTHER ADVENTURES

We explored the Garden District on Tuesday and grave yard near Commander's Palace for photos of wonderful old homes. It  is a lovely area of the city that shows no Katrina damage. We made a visit to the Madi Gras warehouse where all the floats are stored for the parade. Here we took lots of pictures, The photo opportunities here are such we are going back today, Wednesday. After that we came back to the hotel before noon and walked…

NEW ORLEANS AND HURRICANE PHOTOGRAPHY

NEW ORLEANS AND HURRICANE PHOTOGRAPHY

On Sunday I flew from Seattle to Houston and then on to New Orleans to meet my friend Gerry Spence for a week of taking photos around the area and as a general excuse to not work. On my arrival I learned that a state of emergency had been declared as hurricane Ida was heading for Louisiana.  Four to five inches of rain in New Orleans with 40 mph per hour winds were predicted. The sky was dark and overcast, but…

IN NEED OF FOOD AND WINE INTERVENTION IN BUENOS AIRES

IN NEED OF FOOD AND WINE INTERVENTION IN BUENOS AIRES

Not only is this city a  treasure house of architecture, language and culture, but it is equal to European standards for wine and food. We have eaten so much food and had a bottle of wine with lunch and dinner so often we will need help when we get home. Yesterday, Monday, was a holiday – Columbus day. For lunch we ate at a nearby Italian place that was highly recommended. T he talk around us was Spanish and the pasta and wine very…

BUENOS AIRES, THE JEWEL OF ARGENTINA

BUENOS AIRES, THE JEWEL OF ARGENTINA

We were up early for our flight from Mendoza t o Buenos Aires. After coffee and were driven by Alexandro to the airport some forty five minutes away. Born and raised in the city of some 100,000 people he is very proud of the area. When we asked if he had been to the U.S. he told us he had  traveled to Minnesota in his youth to visit a friend in the dead of winter. He forgot about the reverse seasons and…

GREETINGS FROM MENDOZA ARGENTINA

GREETINGS FROM MENDOZA ARGENTINA

We left Santiago to go to the famous Argentine wine country, Mendoza. We took a commuter plane, about the size of a Horizon to Spokane, which was absolutely full, to Mendoza, Argentina. A bout a forty hour flight we flew over the beautiful Andes mountains to the very small Mendoza airport in the Argentina wine country. We got in the long line to clear immigration with only one man reviewing passports. I realized I had my passport in my carry…

REPORT FROM SANTIAGO CHILE

REPORT FROM SANTIAGO CHILE

The weather is pleasant in this city of over six million people. There are tall buildings you would expect to find in a city of this size along with structures from an earlier age. Huge gothic like Cathedrals the Spanish were so fond of building and modern sky scrapers. Under construction is a huge shopping and hotel area that will have the tallest building in South America. The Ritz Carlton is a high service hotel with elegant interior furnishings. The…

GREETINGS FROM SANTIAGO, CHILE

GREETINGS FROM SANTIAGO, CHILE

On Monday October 5, 2009 Lita and I left Seattle on American Airlines on our way to Dallas and there to switch planes to go to Santiago, Chile. We were to catch a 9:00 pm flight from Dallas to Santiago. Our plans called for us to spend three days in lovely Santiago and then fly to Argentina for several days in the wine country. From there we were to go on to Buenos Aires for a plaintiff trial lawyers meeting where I…

TAKING TIME OFF

TAKING TIME OFF

We are leaving Sunday on our Grand Banks Eastbay. It's a wonderful thirty nine foot boat that is not large and draws only four feet of water. With twin Diesels it can travel at 30 MPH but our cruising speed is much less. Our route is to Port Townsend for the night and then on to Roche Harbor on San Juan Island for a couple of days. On the way home we will stop at Port Ludlow for the…

EPILOG TO PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES

EPILOG TO PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES

We are home and here are some final loose ends regarding our travel which I've not reported. The French Air disaster occurred shortly before we were leaving. I felt badly for the people on board and their survivors. It certainly made me a little apprehensive about flying across the ocean from London to Seattle, but the flight on the 747 was without bad weather or incident. On our arrival in Seattle there was a long line to clear immigration as…

LONDON

LONDON

Last night we had an early dinner and attended the musical Oliver. It has been running for some long time now with sold out performances. Our seats were in a good location, but like most, if not all of the theaters in London, the seats are worse the coach seats on a cheap commuter airplane because they are very close together and I cannot sit with my knees straight ahead. They had binoculars for rent that are bolted between the seats so that…
