NICOLA LUVERA, ITALIAN IMMIGRANT & GRANDFATHER

My grandfather, Nicola Luvera died in Anacortes on Independence Day, July 4, 1956 after living more then ninety years. My chief regret is that he spoke no English and I spoke no Italian so we never had a real conversation – only through my father's interpretation. Dad believed his children should learn and speak English because we were Americans. In addition, mother's families native language was Croatian since they had immigrated from the Island of Brac in Croatia. My grandfather's…

Unfortunately, the kind of support the survivor gets from family and well intentioned people isn't helpful.  Sometimes  people think they are doing a favor by encouraging the survivor to get over the death and move on, but they have no idea what that person…

My maternal grandmother Marija Babarovich died on August 5th, 1953. She  died the year I graduated from high school in Anacortes, Washington. Her life story is one of great courage and sacrifice involving immigration to America while not being able to speak English.
