The Grub Worm & Heaven

The Grub Worm & Heaven

Jesuit spiritual writer Mark Link S.J. has written a number of spiritual mediations in booklet form that are inspiring as well as informative. In his Jesus 2000, a contemporary walk with Jesus, he tells the story of Dragonfly the grub worms at the bottom of a pond who couldn’t understand why those who climbed up the stems of the water lillies never returned to tell them what they found. They selected one who was to climb up and then come back to describe it to the rest. When that grub worm reached the surface he was astounded by what he saw and then he suddenly changed into a gorgeous dragonfly. As he circled, flying around the lilly pad he climbed up, he knew he would never be able to return to the bottom of the pond and even if he could, he knew they would never believe him anyway. Fr. Link applies the story to our entering a new spiritual life that awaits us after death. In reading the story I am reminded of Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 2:7 quoting from Isaiah 64:4: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the hearts of man the things which god has prepared for those who love him."
