FATE AND MY 1953 CHEVROLET BEL AIR CAR

FATE AND MY 1953 CHEVROLET BEL AIR CAR

Someone has said: "coincidence is God's way of being anonymous." Brett Lunsford, who is the director of the Anacortes Museum, recently sent me a photo of my mother and I standing next to a 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air car. That car is connected to my living in Gig Harbor Washington and the role of fate in my life. The connection involves being born and raised in Anacortes and ending up in Gig Harbor. After graduating from Gonzaga law school in…

He died in Anacortes, Washington March 5, 1935.  I was born 12 days after he died. It must have have been a very difficult time for my mother, to lose her father and then give birth to me.  He and my grandmother had seven children all of whom, except my mother, Mary, who was born in Anacortes,…

MARIJA BABAROVICH 1863 – 1953

MARIJA BABAROVICH 1863 – 1953

My maternal grandmother Marija Babarovich was born September 9, 1863 and died on August 5th, 1953. She died the year I graduated from high school in Anacortes, Washington. Her life story is one of great courage and sacrifice involving immigration to America while not being able to speak English. I've previously talked about that in writing about my mother.https://paulluverajournalonline.com/weblog/2010/07/mary-thelma-luvera-.html.html I remember her vividly. A tall erect woman with hair piled high on her head, she looked regal and carried herself…

REFLECTIONS ON ANACORTES, MY HOME TOWN

REFLECTIONS ON ANACORTES, MY HOME TOWN

I was going through the wonderful Anacortes Museum (https://www.anacorteswa.gov/333/Museum) photo collection and was reminded of my own life growing up in Anacortes. I was reminded of the lines from Lewis Carroll's classic book Alice in  Wonderland. Alice asks the White Rabbit, "How long is forever?" The White Rabbit responds "Sometimes just one second." In my case, while the events may have happened a "forever" ago, in my mind it seems like just yesterday. For example, I clearly can see what is…

WRITERS IN OUR FAMILY

WRITERS IN OUR FAMILY

My daughter Susan luvera Chiabai has written a self published book: Dear Nick – Letters From the Edge. She explains the title by saying that the contents are letters to her brother Nick which she says were written during bouts with insomnia in the early morning hours, but not actually mailed. The contents deal with her experiences from the year 2000 through 2012 involving her children and family. Her description of life with her husband Ron over 26 years and…

NICOLA LUVERA 1860 – 1956

NICOLA LUVERA 1860 – 1956

My grandfather, Nicola Luvera died in Anacortes on Independence Day, July 4, 1956 after living more then ninety years. My chief regret is that he spoke no English and I spoke no Italian so we never had a real conversation – only through my father's interpretation. Dad believed our family should speak English because we lived in America so my sisters and I never learned either parent's native language. My grandfather's story is one of courage and determination. After working in…
