Alberto Gonzales is Only The Tip of the Problem of The Bush Administration

Alberto Gonzales is Only The Tip of the Problem of The Bush Administration

There has been so much already written about the resignation of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General that I hesitate to even add a comment. However, as pointed out by Representative Louise Slaughter in her blog entitled "Restore justice to the justice department," what does bear further comment is the issue of the total lack of integrity the Bush gang has brought to our government. As she correctly points out his resignation is the product of a pattern we have seen…

A big D for the Bush Administration Report Card

A big D for the Bush Administration Report Card

Jeffrey Simpson is a syndicated columnist in Canada who wrote a recent article about what he called "the three D’s." He said: "The United States under (Bush’s) leadership, spends more than it raises in taxes, imports more then it exports and uses more energy than the country can produce domestically." He went on to point out that if report cards were being issued, Mr. Bush would get three D’s: a fiscal deficit, a trade deficit and an energy deficit. Mr….

Good Riddence to Bad Rubbish – Karl Rove Leaves the Whitehouse

Good Riddence to Bad Rubbish – Karl Rove Leaves the Whitehouse

"Bush’s brain" has left the building. Karl Rove, the paid consultant to Phillip Morris and propaganda minister to the Bush Whitehorse, resigned before the ship of state sank. I admit I have contempt for this man’s morals and ethics as well as for his total lack of character. I’ve commented about Rove lots of times, (3/17/07) but it’s to be remembered that this man continued as a paid consultant for the tobacco giant Phillip Morris even while acting as an…

Our Spinless Democrats in Congress

Our Spinless Democrats in Congress

Letters to the Editor in the New York Times of August 8th captured my feeling of disappointment in Congressional Democrats as having no backbone at all when it comes to Iraq and the continued intrusion into America’s right of privacy by this administration. As letters in the Times put it: "To their shame, sixteen Democrats in the Senate and forty one in the House voted to hand the president monarchial powers that the signers of the Constitution had withheld. The…

Two Historical Oppressive Administrations: Woodrow Wilson’s Adminstration & the Bush Administration

Two Historical Oppressive Administrations: Woodrow Wilson’s Adminstration & the Bush Administration

I’ve written about the oppressive policies of the Bush administration and that of Woodrow Wilson before https://paulluverajournalonline.com/weblog/2007/02/p.html. But, I was primarily describing the pre World War I situation and the Palmer raids. In fact,  the situation did not improve after the start of war in 1917, and instead became much worse. Not unlike the situation in this country after the Bush Administration rammed the Patriot Act through Congress. The Sedition Act was passed in 1918 while Wilson was president and…

The “Do-Nothing” Congress

The “Do-Nothing” Congress

President Harry Truman, who defeated Dewey in 1948, took delight in attacking the Republican controlled 80th Congress for their lack of action. He called Congress the "do-nothing" Congress and pointed out how little they accomplished in any meaningful legislative action. The same epitaph of a "do-nothing" Congress can be applied to the Democrats. Talk about "wasting political capital," the Democrats were elected in reliance on their promise to take action to bring the troops home and get America out of…

The Iraq Diaster & the Charge of the Light Brigade

The Iraq Diaster & the Charge of the Light Brigade

In reflecting on Tennyson’s poem Charge of the Light Brigade (See post of 7/8/07) it occurred to me it has meaning in connection with the Iraq war. Not only as a similar unwinable military action, but as to the Bush administration’s attack on anyone who is critical of the Iraq war. In the Crimean War a brigade of British calvary was sent on a suicide mission into the face of superior forces and overwhelming gun power because of a senseless…

“Fear and Loathing” of Dick Cheney – Washington Post Series

“Fear and Loathing” of Dick Cheney – Washington Post Series

My son, Nick Luvera, sent me an email alerting me to a series in the Washington Post about vice president Richard Cheney. I began reading the articles on the internet and was reminded that he causes in me all the intense objections I have for elected officials who believe they alone know what’s best for all of us, who care nothing for public opinion or public interests and believe they are above the law, free to do whatever they think…

Dick Cheney Re-Writes The Constitution by Insisting The Office Of Vice President is Not Part of the Executive Branch

Dick Cheney Re-Writes The Constitution by Insisting The Office Of Vice President is Not Part of the Executive Branch

Vice President Cheney has made the astounding claim that his office, Vice President of the United States, is not a part of the executive branch of government. Flying in the face of the United States Constitution and history as taught in American schools since the country was founded, Mr. Cheney insists that his office really isn’t part of the executive branch after all. So, why would he make such a silly claim? The vice president, who has never been reluctant…

Malapropisms, Spoonerisms, Mixed Metaphors & George W. Bush

Malapropisms, Spoonerisms, Mixed Metaphors & George W. Bush

Discovery Magazine in the June 2007 issue published a list of speech errors composed by Scott Kim. He lists the following: Malapropisms which is substituting the wrong word for a similar sounding one. For example: "I am sure I have done everything in my power since I exploded the affair." Spoonerisms which is switching the first sounds of two close words. For example, "It is kisstomary to cuss the bride." A better example is George Bush’s May 4, 2007 Washington…
