TURN COAT JOE LIBERMAN

TURN COAT JOE LIBERMAN

Senator Joe Liberman, who bills himself as an "independent democrat" has written an Op Ed in the May 21st Wall Street Journal titled "Democrats and our enemies." He tries to justify the fact that he is a traitor to the democratic party and explain his support for the Republican John McCain. The fact he is willing to write in the this publication for capitalist's attacking Barack Obama while supporting Senator McCain confirms once again that he is not "Independent Democratic" at all. He is…

Elvis will soon be leaving the building – but only for awhile: Report of Our Europe Travels

I may not be able to maintain this blog for the next couple of weeks because my wife Lita and I are leaving for Europe. I don’t know whether I’ll find internet cafes or the time to report on our travel, so, be patient. We fly from Seattle to London/Heathrow where we connect by plane for Italy. This will be a test of Heathrow’s new terminal 5 where, after spending millions on a new terminal and baggage system, over 15,000…

Dorothy Day: The Duty of Delight and Daniel Ellsberg

There is a connection between Daniel Ellsberg of Watergate fame and Dorothy Day founder of the Catholic Worker. Daniel Ellsberg was famous in 1971 for his role regarding "the Pentagon Papers." She was regarded as a serious threat by the British and their allies to supply shipping which was vital to the British in particular. The Germans moored the ship in a narrow fjord where underwater nets were rigged to prevent submarines from entering and anti aircraft guns protected her…

MEDITATIONS FROM SCRIPTURE

MEDITATIONS FROM SCRIPTURE

While reading my Bible today I reflected on several passages. Two of them, from St Paul, have excellent advice about the importance of attitude. How we view things is, after all, our reality no matter what the real facts might be. That is the essential difference between an optimistic attitude and one of a pessimistic person. Here’s what Paul says: "Be made new in the attitude of your minds." (Ephesians 4:23) and "Be transformed by the renewal of our mind."…

SEQUEL TO THE STORY OF THE JUDGE AND THE CAP

SEQUEL TO THE STORY OF THE JUDGE AND THE CAP

Today’s paper clarifies my reporting about the district court judge who ordered the cancer victim to remove her knitted cap in his court room. She left the court room in tears because she did not want to be embarrassed by removing the cap she was wearing to cover the fact she had lost her hair from  chemotherapy treatment. It turns out the judge did know she had cancer when he nevertheless insisted she remove it. In an after the fact…

OLD WARRIORS OF THE PLAINTIFF BAR

OLD WARRIORS OF THE PLAINTIFF BAR

My friend, attorney Murry Kleist gave me this photo of the Board for the Washington State Trial Lawyer’s Association. I don’t know the date, but I suspect it was in the late 1960’s. I think I’ve identified everyone correctly. Starting in the back row from the left are: Edward Dawson, Spokane; Duane Lund, deceased;J. Peter Tonkoff, Yakima, deceased; Nelvin Bettis, deceased. Herb Freise, deceased; Aaron May, Tacoma, deceased. In the front row from the left are: Paul Luvera, Gig Harbor;…
